The Topic

The Challenge of Modern Governance

A growing number of directors have attended educational courses as a first step understanding organisational good governance. The real challenge is take the theory of modern good governance and put into practice, to make governance work in an organisation.

In this presentation, GovernRight founder, Simon Neaverson, will examine the key features of a Good Governance Framework necessary to strike the correct balance between oversight and management and build a culture of engagement throughout the organisation, in order to embed good governance.

Of key importance is how to adapt an organisation’s good governance framework to meet the changing expectations of directors. In particular, how can the directors achieve the right level of comfort that what is meant to be happening is in fact happening and how can a board add value and still meet these changing obligations.

The Speaker

Simon Neaverson, GovernRight Founder, AICD senior facilitator

Simon Neaverson is a leader in corporate governance, board engagement, strategy and risk management having advised boards, partnerships and senior managers in numerous Australian and international organisations, across a broad range of industries for more than 25 years. He is the founder of TPPG Pty Limited, a consultancy aligning strategy, risk oversight and good governance. Simon’s extensive experience has seen him work with public and private companies and organisations in the health, government, educational and not-for-profit sectors including the Primary Health Networks for both Central and Eastern Sydney and South Western Sydney, Cerebral Palsy Alliance, The Exodus Foundation, St Augustine’s College and Cana Communities.

Simon has fulfilled roles as executive and non-executive director, board chair and chairman of a range of board sub-committees for more than 20 years. Simon’s passion is to take the theory of good corporate governance and embed it into organisations to make governance work. His wealth of experience led Simon to develop the GovernRight Framework, a practical and robust tool that supports directors and senior executives to drive organisational performance and compliance, in complex and changing business environments. Throughout his career, Simon has facilitated over 300 planning sessions across a wide range of industries.

A Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (“AICD”) since 2008, Simon is a senior facilitator and educator in corporate strategy, risk, governance and improving board effectiveness. He was recently presented with an AICD 20 year Faculty Award ‘in appreciation of (his) ongoing contribution and excellence to the gold standard in governance education.’

Simon has delivered and facilitated more than 1,000 modules for the AICD. His audiences frequently commend him for providing a ‘real and applied sense of the board dynamic’, for ‘blending theory and practice’ and for ‘challenging participants’ views of corporate roles’. During this time, Simon has contributed to AICD course materials and authored articles for Company Director magazine on practical tools to improve board performance.

Early in his career, Simon was a senior manager in the Enterprise group of Arthur Andersen, Chartered Accountants. There he specialised in providing strategic and operational advice to fast growing, closely-held businesses and had national responsibility for consulting to law firms.

In addition to his AICD Fellowship, Simon holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance) degree (with Merit) form the University of New South Wales, was awarded a merit certificate for outstanding performance in the professional year and received an honourable mention in the National Young Accountant of the Year Award. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Australia.
